Contemporary African Master: Abiodun Olaku

Since the post-colonial times in Africa, the different peoples of Africa have had a cultural fusion of Traditional and Western values. Abiodun Olaku was born at the beginning of this period, on the 29th of December 1958, two years before Nigeria gained her independence. With an early found love for art, he's been recognised for his dynamic practice as a landscape painter and is one of Africa's most accomplished landscape painters. He's enthusiastic interest in the arts since his early years had him always participate in the arts and crafts in Baptist Academy (1970 -1975). He eventually leaned towards arts fully deciding to pursue an arts degree.

After working in the civil service for 7 years (1982 - 1989) Olaku resigned and began his art career at the National Gallery of Modern Art at the National Theatre in Lagos with other masters and pioneers of visual arts in Nigeria like Bisi Fakeye, Felix Osiemi, Bunmi Babatunde and The late Alex Shyngle. He is a founding member, inaugural vice-president and trustee of the Guild of Professional Fine Artists of Nigeria (GFA), a co-founder and trustee of Universal Studios of Art, National Theatre and a respected member of the Society of Nigerian Artists. He's an inspiration to the younger generation and a key figure on the Nigerian art scene.
